BDS in July 2025

The month of July 2025 holds three possibilities for unprecedented improvements for Palestine. There are three international conferences regarding the conflict in the Middle East.

3 July: The streaming service MUBI announced the cancellation of the MUBI Fest 2025 due to protests over the partly ownership of Sequoia Investments that also finances Israeli weapons industries.

3 July: Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe donned a pro-Palestine dress for the Canberra Midwinter Ball.

13 July: Brad Lander, the comptroller for New York City divests from Israeli bonds. Mayor Eric Adams accused Lander of application of a BDS policy but Lander defended the divestment as New York City has many investments in other Israeli companies.

And as suspected, the EU has not issued sanctions against Israel on the 15th July. The EU supposedly can issue sanctions as soon as they deem it fit, but the next in-person meeting of the EU-foreign ministers is only in October 2025.

12 countries around The Hague Group, Bolivia; Colombia; Cuba; Indonesia; Iraq; Libya; Malaysia; Namibia; Nicaragua; Oman; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; and South Africa issued on the 16th July new sanctions on Israel such as a weapons embargo and also a prohibition of weapons being exported to Israel over its ports or ships. 

14 July: The Turkish Energy Company Zorlu sold all its shares of its 25% stake in the Israeli Energy Firm Dorad which provided energy for IDF bases. A venue of Zorlu was boycotted by the BDS by an Irish band before.

The UEFA fined Israels fans of Maccabi Haifa of four accounts but refused Hamruns request to play the away game on neutral ground in mid July.

On the 17th July Slovenia banned the two Israeli Minsters Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich from entering their country for their support of the expansion of Israeli occupation of Palestine.

  • On the 29th July 2025 there will be a United Nations conference co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. But hopes are low as one of the main actors pushing for the recognition of Palestine, the French President Emmanuel Macron is not attending. But hopes surged again after Macron announced on the 25th, that France will recognise Palestine at the UN Assembly in September. On the 29th July Keir Starmer followed suit only refusing to recognise Palestine if Israel accedes to a ceasefire and refuses to annex the West Bank. 

In July 2025 the pension fund of the Swiss city of Geneva (CPEG) divests from the Israeli Discount Bank and from Israeli companies that violate international law. 

In early July, Spain initiated a judicial investigation on the capturing of the ship Madleen on its way to Gaza on which also a Spanish citizen was aboard. The investigation is aimed against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Israel Katz and senior military figures.

On the 20th July 2025 the Belgian police detained and questioned two Israeli soldiers who were flying the flag of the army company active in Gaza at the Tomorrowland festival. Later an investigation for war crimes was initiated, but the soldiers seem to have been released. 

Tomorrowland also cancelled the set of DJ Skazi over his performance at several military bases in Israel.

Brazil left the IHRA group in July 2025

On the 24th July 2025 the French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will recognise Palestine in September at the General Assembly of the United Nations.

24 July: trains stations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Hague, Utrecht and others were occupied by protesters for Palestine. The Mayor of Amsterdam pressured the national government to do more for Gaza.

26 July: protesters occupied a railway track at the Bern main station.

28 July: The French foreign Minister reconfirmed it at the UN conference of the two-state solution.

The same day the Edinburgh Fringe Comedy Festival cancelled the show of Philip Simon who seemingly supported Israels treatment of the Palestinians. The Banshee Labyrinth also cancelled his show. 

The comedian Rachel Creeger was supposed to act ate the same stage but this show was also cancelled. the venue said the two comedians held a vigil for Israeli soldiers last year at the venue.

On the 29th July the EU will discuss cutting some access of Israel to the Horizon Research Program. But it of course has not cut it yet the next day. 

29 July: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the UK would recognise Palestine if Israel will not desist from annexing the West Bank and commit to a ceasefire with the Hamas

29 July: The Netherlands imposed an entry ban on Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich for their support of the Israeli settlement movement and the forced migration of the Palestinians.

29 July: Several people left the venue where the Jewish Regina Spektor played after a discussion about Israels actions in Gaza occurred. Spektor is known for her pro-Israeli activism and condemned the Icelandic Björk who shared Palestinians being expelled from their homes.

On the 31st July Canada announced it would also recognise Palestine on September.
